TIPS FOR KAYAKERS

  • Stay ahead of Marine and Weather Forecasts: Weather conditions can quickly change on Lake Huron. Only paddle when waves are 2 feet or less and winds are 0-10 knots. Monitor the marine forecast and avoid paddling in rough conditions.

  • Know Your Limits: This is considered an intermediate paddle. If you’re new to kayaking, opt for a guided tour with Port Austin Kayak for safety and local insights. If conditions feel unsafe, turn back or reschedule for another day.

  • Pack Essentials: Bring water, snacks, a dry bag for your phone/keys, and a small towel. Consider a waterproof phone case for photos. Always bring a properly fitted life jacket—safety is non-negotiable on the water.

  • Know Your Route: The 7-mile out-and-back trip takes 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace. Follow the shoreline to Thumbnail Point, sea caves, and finally Turnip Rock.

  • Be Prepared for Shallow Waters: The water is shallow for most of the trip, making it beginner-friendly. Watch for rocks and avoid dragging your kayak.
