December Newsletter
We want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to all of you—our Chamber members. Your continued commitment throughout the year is essential to the success of the Greater Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce and the growth of our town.
Throughout the year, we have seen firsthand how our members’ involvement strengthens not only the Chamber, but the entire community. From volunteering at events to providing invaluable resources, your contributions help our mission to promote local businesses, support commerce, and foster a sense of connection among our residents and visitors.
As we reflect on this past year, we are reminded of the power of collaboration and the importance of working together. This holiday season, our events were a perfect reflection of just that.
Tree Lighting Ceremony
With a stunning tree generously donated by Josh Kidd and Julie Toner, the Tree Lighting Ceremony brought a heartwarming start to Christmas.
Despite the brisk wind and chilly temperatures, the town came together in full force to celebrate. Although it was too windy to safely light the fire pits generously provided by Bird Creek Farms, the Corner Beverage kept everyone toasty with hot cocoa. While Gerald Prill played our favorite holiday tunes, Szymanski’s Creekside Acres continued the festive spirit by distributing S’more kits for a sweet treat, and Santa came in hot with the Port Austin Fire Department.
A highlight of the evening, Jason Zimmerman from Zimmerman & Sons Electric, delivered a moving speech that captured the spirit of our community and the evening. The crowd then cheerfully counted down and watched in awe as our beautiful tree was illuminated, marking the official start of the holiday season.
A heartfelt thank you to those who helped harvest and setup the tree, and all who took part in making this event so special: Todd Murawski from Bird Creek Farms, Brian Hoody, Casey Bruce from Osentoski Realty, Deanna Kidd from The Butterfly House, Gene Clancy & Sons, Gerald Prill, Jason Zimmerman from Zimmerman & Sons Electric, Jessica Virgenski, Jon Mauk, Penny Ferreri from the Port Austin Legion, Lisa Szymanski from Szymanski’s Creekside Acres, Ted Williams from Dirty Time Landscaping, Kelly Szymanski from The Corner Beverage, the Port Austin Fire Department, Thomas Rapson, and the DPW .
Mini Tree Fundraiser
The annual Mini Tree Fundraiser raised over $1,600! These funds help to further the Chamber’s mission of supporting local businesses and enhancing our community.
Donated by local businesses and community members, seventeen beautiful trees adorned the Welcome Center throughout the bidding period. Additional decorations were provided by Grindstone General Store, adding the perfect touch to the Christmas display.
The Chamber is very grateful for the creativity of our donors and their generous role in this fundraiser: Chris Szelap, Beach Glass by Christine, Community Playhouse, Dirty Time Landscaping, Finan & Schmidt Insurance Agency, Lemon Tree Marketplace, Port Austin Hardware, Port Austin Library, Port Austin State Bank, Szymanski’s Creekside Acres, The Butterfly House, The Cove, The Farm Restaurant, The Landing Tavern, and Thumb Brewery.
Soup Stroll
The Soup Stroll saw an incredible turnout this year. With several other seasonal events taking place, the Village of Port Austin was truly alive with the holiday spirit! As this event continues to grow, so does the friendly competition. While all competitors earned rave reviews on their delicious soups, we give special recognition and congratulations to our winners!
The Lake Street Emporium won first place with Chicken Gnocchi Soup. Second place went to The Garfield Inn for Tuscan Soup, and 85ten earned third place with Italian Harvest.
We sincerely appreciate all contestants for their participation and contributions to Soup Stroll: 85ten, Cafe 53, Community Playhouse, Lake Street Emporium, Lake Street Local, Port Austin Dime Store, Port Austin Hardware, Port Austin Market - IGA, Szymanski’s Creekside Acres, The Cove, The Garfield Inn, The Landing Tavern, and United Protestant Church.
As this year comes to a close, we give great thanks to our members, volunteers, and donors. Thank you for helping to make 2024 and all our community events such a success. We look forward to continuing these Port Austin traditions in the years to come.
Wishing you the Merriest Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
Warmest regards,
